What Is App Store Optimization (ASO) and Why It Matters
Most app downloads don’t come from ads or press — they come from someone searching the App Store or Google Play and picking one of the results. App Store Optimization (ASO) is the discipline of making sure that search finds you, and that what it finds convinces someone to actually download.
The two halves of ASO
ASO splits into two distinct problems that get solved differently:
Getting found — ranking for the searches your potential users actually type. This is driven by which words appear in your app’s name, subtitle, and (on iOS) a dedicated 100-character keyword field that isn’t shown to users at all but is indexed by search. Getting this right means researching real search terms, not guessing at them.
Getting downloaded — once someone lands on your listing, convincing them to tap install. This is a conversion-rate problem, driven by your icon, screenshots, preview video, and description — the same kind of thing a landing page does, just inside the app store.
Both stores handle these mechanics differently. Apple’s keyword field is genuinely invisible to users but directly indexed; Google Play has no equivalent field and instead crawls your visible title, short description, and full description for ranking signals — so on Android, the same text that helps you convert also has to carry your keywords.
What actually moves the needle
- Title and subtitle — the highest-weighted fields for search ranking on both platforms, and the first thing a searcher reads. Front-load the words people actually search, not brand-first phrasing.
- Screenshots — the primary conversion driver. The first 2–3 screenshots do most of the work; assume most viewers never scroll past them.
- Ratings and reviews — both a ranking signal and a conversion signal. A prompt at the right moment (after a successful action, not on first launch) meaningfully changes your average rating over time.
- Localization — translating your listing (not necessarily the whole app) into your top markets’ languages is often the single highest-ROI ASO investment, since it unlocks search visibility in an entire new-language market at once.
- Update cadence and description: regular updates and an accurate, benefit-led description support both trust and ranking, though they matter less than the above.
A concrete before/after
Imagine an app currently titled just its brand name, with generic “app screenshot” images and no localization. Retitling it to lead with what it does (e.g. “Caddy — Copy & Paste” rather than just “Caddy”), redesigning the first three screenshots around the single strongest use case, and localizing the listing into two or three additional markets typically produces measurable download growth within weeks — without changing a line of the app’s code.
Why this is worth treating as its own discipline
ASO decisions are cheap to make and cheap to reverse (a listing update ships far faster than an app update), but they compound — a listing that converts 2% better than another, sustained over every future visitor, is a permanent lift with no ongoing cost. Most teams that build an app never invest real effort here, which is exactly why it’s one of the higher-leverage things to get right.
Elmeris practices ASO on its own apps (Caddy, Authenticator Exporter) before recommending it to anyone else. See our App Store Optimization services — including combined ASO + development for apps we also build, since the two feed each other directly.
